On the cul-de-sac we meet up with an elderly woman we see around the same time each day in the afternoon. She pushes her walker in front of her at a pretty fast pace considering her age. She is accompanied by a caretaker for daily exercise around the loop. In the winter the woman is wrapped in a beautiful fur coat, hair done, bright lipstick, 90+ I’m guessing.
When we first met, attune to style, she said, you’re wearing a red coat. Hmmm, that’s something. Not everyone can wear a red coat.
Today we are walking the loop, and it’s a warm spring day. Penelope and I see our stylish senior in leopard skin tights, bright lips, hair done, making the turn. We catch up.
.
She throws herself at the woman’s legs, rubbing against her and circling her like a cat. The woman is startled and isn’t sure what to do or think. Penelope goes around again. She is between the woman and her walker. It’s hard to pull her off when she decides to wrap her 65 lb body as close to you as she can. Thankfully, the woman stays standing.
Do you have dogs or cats, I ask, thinking Penelope is rubbing her scent on her for a reason. No, she says. , , .
We continue on and encounter another older woman walking and balancing herself with two walking canes. Without hesitation, Penelope goes right in, around and in-between her legs. If this dog could purr, I think she would. The woman is delighted.
I’ve seen Penelope do this with random people. A nurse down the street pulling her weeds, nearly knocking her off balance. EMT’s attending to my neighbor next door. The minister and his deeply spiritual wife.
Is it really so random? It seems like Penelope has a sense for the extra-special people, our caretakers, and the ones who need a little more love and appreciation.
She tells me, be in deep appreciation. Give all the you got.
What’s one thing you can do today to love a little more boldly?
With Love and Appreciation,
Dyanne
